Who We Are Built on a formula for mutual success.
Empowering people to grow their future and build their legacy.
During our careers in real estate and banking, we noticed an underserved market—people denied mortgages because they did not meet the strict guidelines of traditional banks. The problem wasn’t the borrowers’ financial viability—it was a lending system prioritizing rigidity over real potential. This inspired the inception of PHL—a company to connect investors with underserved borrowers through our Mortgage Investment Corporations (MICs), offering alternative solutions that prioritize community progress alongside disciplined returns.
Our mission is simple: empower financial success through transparent and reliable alternative mortgage solutions, while building trust and lasting relationships with our clients and partners.

Our legacy.
Our Beginnings: An Opportunity to Help
PHL began as a way to fill a gap in the market left by overly rigid traditional lenders, creating opportunities for borrowers and investors to build legacies through homeownership and entrepreneurship. In 2006, PHL founders, Steve Ponte and Parm Purewall, were working as senior commercial lenders at a national financial institution, where they regularly witnessed individuals and businesses who required credit turned away because they could not meet conventional bank lending criteria. Steve and Parm knew that many of these people and businesses were low credit risks and deserved an opportunity. Seeing an opportunity to help, they created PHL.
Connecting Borrowers to Investors
The PHL founders saw a need for a different type of credit provider that created opportunities for verified borrowers, who may not meet traditional criteria, to access the funding they needed. Knowing their mortgage, real estate, and lending experience would give them a unique advantage in assessing risk and seeing hidden opportunities, PHL creates value for investors through mortgage investment opportunities focused on capital preservation, while offering borrowers flexible financing solutions outside conventional lending criteria.
A Win-Win Success
PHL has established itself as a trusted leader in the Canadian alternative lending market, managing over $750 million in shareholder capital. Our proven and established writing process has resulted in exceptional returns while protecting investor capital through disciplined risk management. Additionally, we’ve been able to provide over $3 billion in financing for entrepreneurs, single-income families, and start-ups to secure their mortgage.
Success Beyond the Numbers
Our greatest pride extends beyond shareholder success to the meaningful impact we’ve created in communities throughout British Columbia. By providing thoughtful alternative financing solutions, we’ve empowered individuals and businesses to build prosperous futures, contributing to sustainable economic growth that strengthens local neighborhoods and creates lasting opportunity.
A team you can rely on.

Lending A Hand Investing in our community.
Investing in our community is one of the core values PHL is built on. The best way, we feel, to positively impact the future of a community is to provide support to the children and youth who reside there. Through Lending A Hand, PHL donates to charities—including the Cloverdale Community Kitchen, Langley School District Foundation, and Surrey Schools Leadership in Learning—that focus their efforts on supporting at-risk children and youth. In addition to monetary donations, the PHL team regularly participates in hands-on volunteer activities, seeing the true impact of the initiatives we support.
